Did You Know?
Run your easy runs easier
80% of training should be at easy conversational pace — much slower than race pace. Most runners run their easy runs too fast, accumulating fatigue. Save the speed for quality sessions. This is the 80/20 rule of running.

How to use this calculator

1

Choose what to find

Find Pace if you know your goal time. Find Finish Time if you know your typical pace.

2

Select race distance

5K, 10K, Half Marathon, Marathon, or enter a custom distance.

3

Enter known value

The splits and speed show automatically alongside pace and finish time.

The formula explained

Pace = Finish Time (seconds) ÷ Distance (km)
Finish Time = Pace (sec/km) × Distance (km)
Speed (km/h) = 3,600 ÷ Pace (sec/km)

Pace and speed are inverses of each other. A 5:00 min/km pace = 12 km/h. A 6:00 min/km pace = 10 km/h. Mile pace = km pace × 1.60934.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good running pace?

Beginner: 7–9 min/km. Intermediate: 5–7 min/km. Advanced: under 5 min/km. Elite marathon pace is around 3:00 min/km. Focus on consistent improvement rather than comparing to others.

What is a good 10K time?

Recreational runners: 55–70 minutes (5:30–7:00 min/km). Good club runners: 40–55 minutes. Sub-40 is considered excellent for most recreational athletes.

How do I convert pace to speed?

Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace (min/km). So a 5:00 min/km pace = 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h. This calculator shows both simultaneously.

What is negative splitting?

Running the second half of a race faster than the first. Most elite runners negative split. It requires restraint early on but leads to better total times and less energy depletion.

What is a good running pace for a beginner?

A comfortable beginner pace is typically 8-10 minutes per kilometre (13-16 min/mile). Focus on completing the distance first. As fitness improves, pace naturally increases. Aim to maintain a conversational pace.
